The Grazing Days grass-fed beef CSA* is like a magazine subscription, but for beef. (*CSA stands for Community Shared Agriculture and is a way for eaters of food to provide a predictable market for the growers and raisers of food – see What is CSA?). Basically you let Grazing Days know at the beginning of the year how much beef you would like, and then Grazing Days raises that much beef for you during the Spring, Summer, and Fall, and delivers that beef to you in the Fall, Winter and Spring.

Traditionally, farmers sell local beef by the quarter, by the side or whole. Two main barriers that prevent families in Ottawa from getting access to local, high quality, grass-fed beef are their lack of freezer space or that they just don’t eat that much beef. At Grazing Days, we overcome this barrier by selling beef in small shoe-boxed sized portions of 10 lbs or 20 lbs that are easily stored in the freezer above your fridge. Additionally, we deliver these portions of beef to your home in Ottawa on a monthly or bi-monthly basis.

What to order:

There are 6 different order options that depend on two main things: 1) the amount of beef your family goes through in a year and 2) the amount of freezer space you have available to store the beef.

(Please note that our 2014/2015 Grass-fed Beef Delivery is now full. Please submit your name at http://grazingdays.ca/grass-fed-beef/buy-our-beef/ and we will let you know when we start taking orders in early 2015.)

  • Every animal is made up of approximately 25% steak, 25% roast and 50% ground beef, which means:
  • Every 10 lbs consists of approximately 2 (1lb)packages of steak (2 per package), 1 (2.5 to 3 lbs) roast, 1 (1 lb)package of stewing beef or sausage, and 3 or 4 (1 to 1.5 lbs) packages of ground beef

These share sizes are a guide that will work for most people. Feel free to mix and match or double up on an order. For example if you would like to receive 20 lbs of beef, feel free to order two sample boxes. If you are not sure what to order, most of our customers order the Half Share and I would recommend that to anyone who is not sure. If you find that you go through more beef than the half share in a year, you can always order more beef next year.

All of the beef bones, liver, oxtails, tongues, tallow and hearts are sold as add-ons to your existing order. This means that every time I come to your house you have the opportunity to add any of these items to your order ranging in price from $5 for a bag of bones or liver, to $10 for an oxtail. We will then delivery these add-on items with your delivery.

Unfortunately, we do not sell beef by the cut to ensure that all cuts get distributed evenly and fairly. Also, as a rule, we do not accept custom cutting orders.
